Engaging with the past
Screen WM aims to ensure that the West Midlands' rich moving image heritage is safeguarded for current and future generations, and made accessible to the public in a way that is stimulating, entertaining and sustainable. Archives not only provide opportunities for people to enjoy films again, they are also an important repository of our histories and our cultures. Through Archives we can learn about how people lived, worked, dressed, spoke and behaved and gain a better understanding of our histories and different cultures and communities.
Screen WM is committed to the aims of the UK Screen Heritage Strategy and supports MACE, the Media Archive for Central England to maximize public access to a single archive for the whole of the Midlands. There are also a number of important smaller archives and collections in the region.
In October 2007 the then Culture Secretary James Purnell announced an award to the UK Film Council of £25 million to safeguard the future of the UK’s national and regional film archives and collections.
Survey of Moving Image Collections
As part of this work the nine Regional Screen Agencies caried out The Survey of Moving Image Collections held in the Regions. Its purpose was to create a consistent England-wide map that will provide up to date information enabling us to plan for future delivery.
If you hold, or manage, a moving image archive collection click here to take part in the survey or to see the questions before you complete the survey online download them here:Summary_of_questions (.pdf 54 KB)
Developing audiences for the future
Screen WM is committed to building and broadening the audiences for film, and the range of films that audiences have an opportunity to see. We support regional cinemas, touring projects and festivals to ensure that innovative, challenging and entertaining specialized media and film content is screened and the work of regional filmmakers is showcased.
Visit our Regional Exhibition Forum page to find out more about our network for Exhibitors, or our Events page to catch the latest activities taking place across the region.
We currently support Archive and Exhibition projects through the Investment Fund and the Digital Film Archive Fund.
More details of the Archive and Exhibition projects supported by Screen WM can be found on the Case Studies pages for Archive Projects, Exhibition Projects and Festivals.
