Breathing life into the rewriting process.
Advanced level.
Introduction
"I really believe in rewriting, but it isn't just rewriting, it's rethinking, reconceptualizing, approaching things anew." - Tom Rickman (Coal Miner's Daughter, Tuesdays with Morrie)
It is often said that writing is rewriting but the trick is knowing where and how to start.
This two weekend workshop tackles the rewriting process from all angles, guiding the writers and preparing them to be ready to embark on a new draft with vigor and purpose. The classes will be approached by games and exercises, giving writers the opportunity to explore and play with the elements in their story.
Groups will be a maximum of six writers allowing the focus of the course to be on the individual projects. As well as advancing these projects, the course will offer practical tools to aid the participants in the screenwriting process.
Classes will be given from macro and micro perspectives.
In the macro classes, writers will be encouraged to stand back from their script and look at the bigger issues and come up with new solutions for their new drafts. We will look at finding the spine of the story, of restructuring and replotting, developing and deepening characters and exploring the themes of the screenplays.
In the micro classes, we will analyse crucial scenes in the screenplay, isolating character objectives and exploring conflicts in the scenes, so that the writer will gain a better understanding of where the drama comes from in their screenplays.
At the end of the workshops, the writers will have generated a revised story outline and some key notes to guide them in the writing of the new draft.
