Birmingham filmmaker Steven Rainbow's short film 'A Small Silent Film About Death' has been selected for screening at the 6th London Short Film Festival (9th – 18th January 2009) and been shortlisted for the Auteur Award, sponsored by Vauxhall. This year’s judges will include radio journalist and writer Robert Elms, who will attend to present the Award.
Steven says "The film is silent and follows the story of two people who's lives momentarily cross because of an internet mistake. To make it silent was a deliberate choice so that i could present a very old style of image making with a very new subject matter. The essence of the story is that 'you never really know how a person is really saying something from an email'. This story is that idea taken to it's most extreme conclusion. But because it is silent I could talk to the actors all the way through. The white haired woman who played Mrs Jones, had to go through 5 different emotions in less than a minute on screen and she did them brilliantly. But what the audience don't know is that I start off talking to her very gently "Now wipe a tear away from your eyes." and eventually end up screaming at her "Now you're dying of a heart attack. DIE! DAMN YOU, DIE!" I think it works quite well"
