Gaetano Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda is based on Friedrich Schiller’s play Maria Stuart, from 1800. It tells the story of Maria (Mary Queen of Scots), imprisoned by her cousin Queen Elisabetta. Maria hopes for a reprieve as Elisabetta is hesitant to sign her death sentence. However, their mutual love for the Earl of Leicester will have disastrous consequences for Maria.
Renowned divas Mariella Devia and Anna Caterina Antonacci play the roles of Maria and Elisabetta respectively. Vibrantly characterised and containing luminous Beethovenian writing, this exclusive performance is not to be missed.
