Midlands Calling?...the new opps and apps for audio broadcast

20 May 2010 11:26 AM

A talk by one of the Midlands’ veteran radio DJs is being hosted by Birmingham City University. Robin Valk will be speaking at the monthly Creative Networks meeting, on Thursday 26 May, which is being hosted by the University at its Millennium Point campus, Curzon Street, Birmingham.

Robin Valk is a broadcast and software consultant whose career started in the 1960s at the very first student radio station in the UK. In the 1970s he worked in US rock radio before becoming the first DJ hired at BRMB, and in the 1990s at BBC Radio 2 at Pebble Mill.

Robin will be opening up a panel discussion looking at the status of radio today, where to find new talent and how the digital age affects production yet offers new opportunities. Also under the microscope will be the expanding horizons for audio broadcast platforms and how broadcast entrepreneurs can capitalise on the synergy of local music with local radio.

When not consulting in the UK and Europe, teaching, podcasting or blogging, Robin works on radio and music projects. He is currently working on a documentary project about the music and musicians of Handsworth in Birmingham as well as leading a pilot project for the British Library. He is one of the most experienced Selector music programming software operators in Europe and has a ten year association with RCS New York as help author for their flagship products.

The event will start at 4pm for the regular music network event, followed by the talk and panel discussion 6-9pm. To attend this free event email creative.networks@bcu.ac.uk  or call Dave Taylor on 0121 331 5400. Alternatively, register online at www.creativenetworksonline.com

I attended last night's Creative Networks and Robin's talk was highly interesting and thought provoking. Also really enjoyed discussing things closely related (and not related at all!) at length after the session ended - I was chatting in the bar until almost midnight! If you're considering attending, next month's session involves some people from BAFTA who were involved in the making of the programme 'Katie: My Beautiful Face' (sounds interesting) and they're taking a break through July and August... keep your eye out for the next sessions, they're usually very interesting. Top marks to Dave Taylor and all involved for putting on some excellent networking and lecture sessions, they're a bright point in my monthly calendar.
