Join us to celebrate Adult Learners’ Week 2008 with screenings and events across the West Midlands region. Adult Learners' Week is the largest learning campaign in the UK co-ordinated by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) www.wmld.org

Quiet Storm + Discussion
An engrossing politically charged action thriller about four Black men who risk all to confront corrupt African leaders, their patrons in the West, and underworld rivals. Followed by a post screening discussion with the filmmakers. Tickets: £4 (£3)

Other Events Across the Region

A host of screenings, festivals and film related events take place across the West Midlands region catering to a diverse variety of audiences. The following events are just a few highlights of rich screen-based activity taking place:

An Afternoon with Jamil Dehlavi: The Blood of Hussain (15)
Award winning independent guerrilla filmmaker, lawyer, musician and artist, Jamil Dehlavi will present a double bill of his films and take part in a post-screening discussion and audience Q & A session. Starting off with 1981's Blood of Hussain at 3pm, followed by 2005's Infinite Justice at 5.30pm. Organised in Association with South Asian Alliance.

Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness (PG)
Italian masters of silent film soundtracks Yo Yo Mundi with a special performance of their soundtrack to 'natural drama' Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness (1927). Using instruments including; accordion, electric guitars, double bass, saxophone, melodica, keyboards and a mobile phone, music and images are tightly knitted together for a pleasant journey into a faraway time and space captured on film some seventy years ago.

Screen Forum: BBC Film Network Presents...
New Music Shorts + Q & A with Filmmakers

In 2007 BBC Film Network, Electric Proms and New Talent challenged filmmakers to make original films inspired by new music tracks. Partnering with established record labels, who provided some of their latest release tracks, and Warp Films, who produced the selected films with the directors five filmmakers received a budget of up to £5,000 to create their innovative film. This Forum provides an opportunity to see the films and hear from some of the people involved in the productions.

Scott of the Antartic (U)
A special screening as part of Bromsgrove Festival of music. A meticulous recreation of the ill fated 1912 expedition to the South Pole using location footage and based on Scott’s own diaries, with a score by Vaughan Williams which is now generally recognised as one of British film music's finest achievements.

O Thou Transcendent
A screening of the first ever full-length film biography of Ralph Vaughan Williams screening as part of the Bromsgrove Festival of music. Featuring archive performances by Boult and Barbirolli, newly discovered interviews with Vaughan Williams himself and specially recorded extracts from The Symphonies, Job, The Lark Ascending and The Tallis Fantasia. The screening will include an interval followed by an introduction to the second part of the film by the award-winning director, Tony Palmer.

Cipher presents Phantom of the Opera
A screening of the 1925 silent horror The Phantom of the Opera, directed by Rupert Julian with a dark ambient live jazz score from Cipher (Dave Sturt and Theo Travis) utilising contemporary digital sound-processing techniques, acoustic instruments, voices and natural sounds. Programmed as part of Coventry Jazz Festival.
